  4. Pressure is mounting to introduce the drug RU 486 in the U.S.

  7.     If maintaining a woman's right to have an abortion tops the
  8. agenda of pro-choice forces, then introducing RU 486, the
  9. so-called abortion pill, into the U.S. ranks second. So far the
  10. foes of abortion have managed to keep the French-made drug out
  11. of the country. But last week a delegation of American
  12. feminists and scientists met in Paris with executives of
  13. Roussel Uclaf, the French company that manufactures the drug,
  14. and in Frankfurt with officials from Hoechst AG, Roussel's
  15. parent company. The Americans presented a petition signed by
  16. 115,000 people urging the distribution of RU 486 in the U.S.
  17. American support for the drug has also been growing rapidly
  18. among physicians. In June the American Medical Association
  19. passed a resolution supporting the "legal availability of RU
  20. 486 for appropriate research and, if indicated, clinical
  21. practice."

  23.     Judged simply on efficacy and safety, RU 486 marks a major
  24. advancement over other pregnancy-ending techniques. The drug,
  25. which is most effective if used within seven weeks of
  26. conception, prevents the hormone progesterone from being
  27. absorbed by the lining of the uterus. Without that nourishment
  28. the uterus cannot support the growth of the embedded
  29. fertilized egg, and the woman miscarries. Taken with
  30. prostaglandin, a naturally occurring substance that causes mild
  31. uterine contractions, the drug is 95% effective. Developed in
  32. 1982 by Dr. Etienne-Emile Baulieu, RU 486 has so far been used
  33. by an estimated 55,000 women in 15 countries.

  35.     France and China in 1988 formally approved use of the drug,
  36. and Roussel will shortly apply to market it in Britain. The
  37. company has refused to export it to any country unless several
  38. conditions are met, including the legality of abortion and its
  39. acceptance by public, political and medical opinion. According
  40. to Ariel Mouttet, head of international marketing for RU 486
  41. at Roussel, the sticking point in the U.S. is the political
  42. climate. Says she: "We don't want to enter into a social debate
  43. in the U.S."

  45.     American advocates of RU 486 contend that the company is
  46. overestimating the opposition. A Louis Harris survey released
  47. last week found that 73% of American adults support abortion
  48. rights. Supporters believe that acceptance of RU 486 in other
  49. countries will lead women to push harder to bring it to the
  50. U.S. Doctors also warn that if the drug is not made officially
  51. available in the U.S., a black market for it will develop.

  53.     Determined pro-choicers say RU 486 could enter the U.S.
  54. through the back door. The drug has potential as a therapy for
  55. endometriosis and breast cancer. If RU 486 were approved to
  56. treat these conditions, doctors could also prescribe it for
  57. abortions. Roussel opposes any deception. Says Dr. Baulieu: "RU
  58. 486 has to be sold as the abortion pill that it is."
